Rigid Board — The Permanent Structure Behind Every Luxury Box

Rigid board — also called greyboard, chipboard, or bookbinding board — is a dense, compressed paperboard that does not fold or flex. Unlike standard packaging paperboard which ships flat and is assembled at the filling line, rigid board is constructed into permanent box forms at the manufacturing facility. The density and thickness of rigid board creates the substantial, weighty feel that consumers associate with premium quality.

We use 1.5mm, 2mm, 2.5mm, and 3mm rigid board depending on application. The board is wrapped with printed or specialty papers, fabrics, or leather-effect materials to create the finished exterior of rigid boxes. The board provides structural permanence; the wrapping provides brand and aesthetic identity.

Rigid Board Thickness Selection

Rigid board thickness determines the weight and perceived quality of the finished box. 1.5mm is used for lightweight applications including earring boxes, small cosmetic boxes, and light-product gift packaging where a thin but permanent structure is needed. 2mm is appropriate for standard jewelry boxes, cosmetic gift sets, and mid-weight product packaging. 2.5mm is the standard for most luxury retail and corporate gift applications. 3mm provides maximum structural rigidity for large boxes, heavy products, and applications where maximum premium feel is the priority.

Greyboard vs White Board

Standard rigid packaging uses grey chipboard (greyboard) as the structural core. The grey color is not visible in the finished box because the exterior is fully wrapped with printing paper. White board (white rigid board with clay-coated surface) is used for applications where interior surfaces are visible and a white base is required — typically for printing on the interior of the box without separate interior lining.

Wrapping Materials for Rigid Board

The wrapping material applied over rigid board defines the box's exterior aesthetic. Coated paper in matte, gloss, or soft-touch lamination provides the widest range of print-based brand expression. Specialty papers (pearlescent, metallic, embossed, textured) add distinctive surface character. Fabric materials (linen, cotton, velvet) create textile-quality packaging. Leather-effect materials evoke luxury goods associations. We source wrapping materials from specialty mills globally and help brands match material selection to brand positioning.

Rigid Board Packaging in South Carolina — FAQs

What is the weight of rigid board packaging compared to folding cartons?

Rigid board packaging is significantly heavier than folding cartons — a 2.5mm greyboard box weighs 5-10x more than a comparable folding carton. This weight is perceived by consumers as a quality signal: heavier packaging communicates more premium product. The weight also increases shipping cost — a tradeoff brands consciously choose when investing in rigid packaging.

Can rigid board boxes be shipped flat to reduce freight?

Standard rigid boxes ship assembled and cannot be flattened. Collapsible rigid boxes (also called foldable rigid boxes) ship flat and pop into rigid structure at the destination — a compromise between freight efficiency and the premium rigid box aesthetic. We produce both formats.

What adhesives are used in rigid board box construction?

Hot melt adhesive is the standard for rigid box assembly — it provides a strong, fast bond compatible with high-speed production. PVA (polyvinyl acetate) adhesive is used for applications requiring flexibility or where hot melt would cause substrate distortion.

Is rigid board packaging recyclable?

Rigid greyboard is recyclable paper-based material. However, the wrapping paper, fabric, and adhesive used in rigid box construction create a mixed-material structure that is challenging for standard recycling streams. Rigid boxes are frequently kept and reused by consumers, which extends their useful life beyond single-use packaging.

What is the minimum order for rigid board packaging?

Rigid board packaging starts at 50 units. The custom tooling and assembly involved in rigid box production makes 50 units the practical minimum.
