About Double Wall Corrugated

Double wall corrugated (also called double-wall board or DW corrugated) combines two fluted layers — typically B-flute and C-flute — bonded between three liner sheets. This construction provides approximately double the edge crush strength and impact cushioning of single-wall B or C-flute, making it the specification for products requiring maximum protection in demanding distribution environments.

Double wall is the standard for heavy industrial products, large household appliances, fragile high-value items, and any shipping application where product damage risk justifies the additional material investment. The combined BC construction achieves 48-71 ECT ratings that exceed single-wall performance in every dimension.

BC Double-Wall Construction

The most common double-wall configuration combines B-flute (3mm) and C-flute (4mm) between three liner sheets, producing a 6mm total board thickness. The B-flute layer provides close flute spacing for better compression resistance in the stacking direction. The C-flute layer provides larger cells for impact cushioning. The combination achieves 48-51 ECT as standard — significantly stronger than either single-wall option.

When Double-Wall is Required vs Recommended

Double-wall is required (not just recommended) when products exceed 40 lbs, when pallets will be stacked more than 5 boxes high, when fragile products require maximum cushioning, or when shipping in international ocean freight environments where extended vibration exposure compounds cumulative damage. For consumer products under 20 lbs in domestic e-commerce, single-wall B-flute is adequate — double-wall adds cost without commensurate protection benefit.

Double Wall Corrugated FAQs

What ECT rating does BC double-wall achieve?

BC double-wall corrugated achieves 48-51 ECT as standard specification. Premium grades achieve 61-71 ECT for maximum industrial application requirements.

What products require double-wall corrugated?

Products over 40 lbs, fragile high-value items (electronics, glass, ceramics), products shipped in harsh environments (temperature extremes, ocean freight), industrial components, and large household appliances are the primary double-wall applications.

Is double-wall corrugated printable?

Yes. The outer liner of double-wall corrugated prints with the same quality as single-wall — bold brand graphics with flexographic printing, premium quality with litho-lamination.

What is the weight increase of double-wall vs single-wall?

BC double-wall weighs approximately 80-100% more than single-wall B-flute per square foot — the additional liner and fluted medium roughly doubles material weight.

What is the minimum order for double-wall corrugated packaging?

Double-wall corrugated boxes start at 50 units.
