About Snap Lock Bottom Boxes

Snap lock bottom boxes — also known as lock bottom or lock bottom tuck top boxes — feature a bottom closure where four interlocking panels snap into a locked position with a simple pressing motion. Unlike auto-lock bottom boxes which require pre-gluing, snap lock bottoms are assembled at the packing station in a single motion, making them cost-effective to produce and reliable to assemble.

The snap lock mechanism creates a bottom panel that is significantly more secure than a standard tuck-in bottom while requiring no adhesive. The interlocking geometry distributes load across all four panels, providing good resistance to bottom blowout for medium-weight products.

How Snap Lock Bottom Works

The snap lock bottom features four panels with interlocking die-cut tabs and slots. When assembled, the panels are folded down in sequence and the final panel's tab inserts into the slot of the first panel, locking all four panels in position. The geometry creates a mechanically locked structure that resists outward pressure from product weight. The lock disengages from the outside when intentional force is applied, allowing the box to be flattened for disposal.

Snap Lock vs Auto-Lock: Choosing the Right Bottom

Both snap lock and auto-lock bottom constructions outperform standard tuck-in bottoms. Auto-lock (pre-glued) is faster to set up — one motion — and provides the strongest bottom, but costs more to produce. Snap lock is less expensive to produce (no pre-gluing operation) but requires slightly more assembly steps. For medium-weight products and high-volume production without automated case-erecting equipment, snap lock is often the optimal choice.

Snap Lock Bottom Boxes FAQs

How is snap lock bottom different from auto-lock bottom?

Snap lock bottom uses interlocking die-cut panels assembled at the packing station with no adhesive. Auto-lock (crash-lock) bottom is pre-glued in the flat configuration and pops into position in one motion. Auto-lock is faster and stronger; snap lock is less expensive to produce and requires no pre-gluing operation.

What weight products are appropriate for snap lock bottom boxes?

Snap lock bottom boxes are appropriate for products up to approximately 5 lbs. Heavier products benefit from auto-lock or double-wall constructions with higher load capacity.

Can snap lock bottom boxes be food-safe?

Yes. Snap lock bottom boxes on food-safe SBS board with food-grade inks and coatings are appropriate for food packaging applications.

Are snap lock bottom boxes appropriate for automated packing lines?

Snap lock bottom requires a multi-step assembly sequence that is less compatible with automated case-erecting equipment than auto-lock designs. For automated lines, auto-lock bottom is generally preferred.

What is the minimum order for custom snap lock bottom boxes?

Custom snap lock bottom boxes start at 100 units with digital printing.
